About the position

As the Director of Commercial Insurance Underwriting at USAA, you will play a pivotal role in managing a team of commercial insurance underwriting professionals. Your primary responsibility will be to plan, develop, and administer USAA Group Commercial Insurance products and programs that align with operational performance objectives. You will ensure that all products and programs comply with legal requirements, and you may serve as a business process or program owner. This position offers the flexibility to work remotely within the continental U.S., with occasional business travel required. In this leadership role, you will be tasked with developing and implementing underwriting strategies through your teams, while monitoring performance in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and processes. You will direct the identification, analysis, development, and implementation of complex initiatives that maintain the relevance and integrity of underwriting policies and programs, balancing operational efficiency, competitiveness, and regulatory compliance. Your oversight will extend to the development and maintenance of P&C contracts, forms, endorsements, and rates, ensuring adherence to established policies and effective program support. Additionally, you will manage the identification and implementation of opportunities to improve systems that enhance member connectivity and operational efficiency. You will build and oversee a high-performing team through effective recruiting, development, retention, coaching, and performance management. Ensuring that risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies will also be a key aspect of your role.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead, and hold others accountable for implementing underwriting strategy through their teams and monitor performance pursuant to underwriting guidelines and processes.
  • Direct the identification, analysis, development, and implementation of complex initiatives that maintain the relevance and integrity of underwriting policies and programs while balancing operational efficiency, competitiveness, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to established policies and effective program support.
  • Direct resources to develop and maintain P&C contracts, forms, endorsements, and rates in accordance with Commercial Insurance & P&C strategies while maintaining compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Manage the identification and implementation of opportunities to improve systems to increase member connectivity and operational efficiency.
  • Direct the oversight of underwriting supplier programs leveraging available products to improve risk management and operational efficiency.
  • Build and oversee a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 8 years in commercial insurance underwriting, or as a producer or agent of commercial insurance.
  • 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.
  • Experience defining and implementing underwriting processes, procedures, and/or guidelines.
  • Experience researching, developing, writing, applying, & editing policy forms, notices, and procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant industry practices, trends, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in making data driven decisions to create actionable recommendations for performance improvement.
  • Experience in presenting analysis and findings to varying levels of management and business stakeholders to gain support for recommendations and influence initiatives.
  • Proven skills in developing strong relationships with peers and key business stakeholders by collaborating across and outside of an organization.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in writing commercial lines underwriting guidelines, processes and procedures for new products.
  • Experience in Agile methodologies and digital technology.
