About the position

The Director of Consumer Risk Management at Synovus is responsible for directing and managing risk management and compliance programs for the Consumer Bank. This role serves as the primary contact for leadership regarding internal and external examinations, identifies operational risks, implements controls, and monitors compliance. The director acts as the point person for the first line of defense, ensuring effective collaboration with the second and third lines of defense to mitigate risks and achieve business objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage risk management and compliance programs for the Consumer Bank.
  • Serve as the key contact for leadership and inquiries related to internal/external exams.
  • Identify and assess operational risks, implement controls, and monitor for issues.
  • Design and execute first line of defense risk management plans and activities.
  • Review business changes for policy adherence and assess risk for core Consumer Banking processes.
  • Lead efforts to monitor and track remediation efforts and ensure timely completion of action items.
  • Assist in tracking progress of regulatory corrective actions and partner with leadership for adherence to remediation plans.
  • Lead and execute Consumer Bank risk management projects and ad-hoc analyses and reporting.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management regarding risk management activities.
  • Develop a systematic approach to monitor progress of identified issues with compliance adherence and timely remediation.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on emerging market and regulatory risks related to Consumer Bank.
  • Evaluate regulatory, market, and strategic landscape to identify and assess new risks.
  • Recommend enhancements to the Consumer line of business and report self-identified issues.
  • Engage in collaboration with Second Line Risk Management regarding business changes and enterprise risk program changes.
  • Establish key risk indicators (KRI) for Consumer Bank and monitor compliance with KRIs.
  • Develop action plans to close gaps identified through monitoring.
  • Provide guidance and training on lending-related laws and regulations to leadership and team members.
  • Oversee the Consumer Bank self-testing framework to mitigate risk and exposure.
  • Ensure team readiness for exams and manage the redress process implementation.
  • Manage performance management and merit processes for direct and indirect reports.
  • Coach and develop team members to foster engagement and achievement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Risk Management, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of regulatory/risk management experience in consumer banking.
  • Extensive experience in risk and compliance management within the consumer banking industry.
  • Thorough understanding of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to consumer banking operations.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with effective collaboration and communication abilities.
  • Exceptional analytical abilities with attention to detail to identify potential risks and control deficiencies.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing self-testing methodologies and managing remediation efforts.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with strategic thinking and innovative solutions.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present complex information clearly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software products.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) preferred.
