About the position

The Director of Corporate Functions Control Management Governance, Regulatory Change Management at American Express is responsible for leading a team focused on integrating control management into daily operations across various corporate functions. This role involves ensuring that regulatory changes are identified, prioritized, and implemented effectively, while also developing operational risk management strategies and governance structures. The position requires extensive collaboration with multiple business units and aims to uphold strong risk management practices in compliance with enterprise standards.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a diverse team focused on control management within corporate functions.
  • Ensure timely identification and implementation of regulatory changes for Corporate Functions.
  • Develop execution plans for operational risk management, including specific guidelines and project plans.
  • Track and identify issues with Key Risk Indicator (KRI) limits and risk appetite for Corporate Functions.
  • Implement the operational risk framework to enable effective risk management and decision-making.
  • Lead risk and controls governance forums and interface with organization-wide governance processes.
  • Create BU-specific procedures related to Operational Risk Management programs.
  • Facilitate understanding and use of the risk governance framework across business units.
  • Support internal and external exam management processes.
  • Aggregate reporting and support 'change-the-function' activities for the business unit.
  • Develop and administer training initiatives and career progression plans aligned with Operational Risk Management.
  • Establish processes to integrate regulatory changes into the Operational Risk framework.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience in operational risk management, preferably within Risk and/or Internal Audit functions.
  • Strong understanding of operational risk management lifecycle activities.
  • Excellent project management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Expertise in process governance and decision-making processes.
  • Experience in the financial services industry.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management, Legal, or related field; advanced degrees (e.g., MBA, MSc, JD) are advantageous.
  • Experience in translating operational risk strategy into execution guidelines.
  • Experience in tracking and identifying issues with KRI limits.
  • Experience in implementing operational risk governance frameworks.
  • Experience in supporting operational risk exam management processes.
