About the position

The Director of Creative & Cultural Economy for the City of Memphis operates under the general administrative direction of the Mayor, playing a pivotal role in coordinating the city's cultural sector and signature events. This position is essential for streamlining communication and activating collaboration within various government divisions and the broader creative community, which includes funders and partners. The Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategic plans that promote arts and culture throughout the city, ensuring alignment with the Mayor's vision and the overall goals of the City. In this role, the Director collaborates with other city departments and external stakeholders to ensure that cultural initiatives are integrated with broader city objectives. Building and maintaining strong relationships with local arts organizations, cultural institutions, and community groups is crucial for fostering collaboration and enhancing cultural programming and engagement. The Director also represents the city in regional, national, and international arts forums, working to maintain the city's image and garner public support for various programs. The position requires the preparation and delivery of presentations to public committees, the City Council, and outside groups as necessary. The Director formulates policies, goals, and objectives to ensure the highest standards of service delivery and works closely with city finance departments and external funders to manage financial resources effectively. This includes implementing strategies to diversify funding sources and ensure the financial sustainability of cultural initiatives. The Director oversees the development and implementation of data-driven procedures to achieve cultural and economic objectives, utilizing data analytics and performance metrics to evaluate program effectiveness. Additionally, the Director advocates for the needs and interests of artists, cultural workers, and arts organizations, serving as a bridge between city government and the creative community. Collaboration with the communications department and external partners is also essential for developing and implementing public relations strategies that promote arts and culture initiatives, engage residents, and raise awareness of the city's cultural assets.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Memphis' cultural sector and signature events to streamline communication and activate collaboration within government divisions and the creative community.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to promote arts and culture in alignment with the Mayor's vision and City goals.
  • Collaborate with other departments and external stakeholders to ensure integration with broader city objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local arts organizations, cultural institutions, and community groups.
  • Represent the city in regional, national, and international arts forums to maintain the city's image and create public support for programs.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to public committees, City Council, and outside groups as needed.
  • Formulate policies, goals, and objectives to ensure high standards of service delivery.
  • Work closely with city finance departments and external funders to manage financial resources effectively.
  • Implement strategies to diversify funding sources and ensure financial sustainability.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of data-driven procedures to achieve cultural and economic objectives.
  • Advocate for the needs and interests of artists, cultural workers, and arts organizations.
  • Collaborate with the communications department and external partners to develop public relations strategies for arts and culture initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Arts Administration, Cultural Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • At least eleven (11) years of professional experience in arts and/or cultural administration, including management of museums, cultural facilities, performing arts, public arts, or community art engagement.
  • Nine (9) of the eleven (11) years must be in a supervisory capacity.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working collaboratively across multiple sectors including government, business, and philanthropy preferred.
  • Experience in building revenue streams and managing state and federal government contracts preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in public relations and communication strategies for arts and culture initiatives.
  • Familiarity with data analytics and performance metrics in evaluating program effectiveness.
