About the position

The Director of Data Center Facility Engineering will lead a team of Data Center Facility Engineers and Technicians, overseeing the technical infrastructure of the OCI self-managed data center fleet. This role is critical in ensuring that both owned and partner-operated data centers maintain optimal uptime performance and adhere to maintenance protocols. The Director will collaborate closely with Facility Management providers to manage capacity utilization, address local maintenance needs, and support various technical projects. The Data Center Facilities Engineering (DCFE) team plays a vital role in coordinating with facility management service providers to guarantee the continuous availability of power and cooling systems within the data centers. Key responsibilities include managing change processes, providing incident and event support, optimizing space utilization, implementing efficiency upgrades, and offering general engineering support. As a Director, the individual will also be responsible for strategic planning initiatives, aligning business needs with senior leadership, and ensuring that the organization is prepared for future challenges. In addition to technical oversight, the Director will handle HR responsibilities such as conducting performance reviews, coaching and developing team members, and managing the hiring process. The role requires a strong focus on employee development, fostering a culture of collaboration, and embodying the values of OCI. The Director will be expected to achieve results through effective leadership, talent attraction, and retention, while also serving as a role model for the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and support a team comprised of mechanical, electrical, and data center engineers and technicians globally
  • Develop clear objectives and provide consistent, timely employee performance feedback with a focus on employee development
  • Strategically plan for future state of the organization and provide senior leadership with recommendations on business needs for the regions
  • Successfully lead all aspects of critical projects, including solution, coordination of resources, vendor negotiation, project execution, and communication
  • Oversee and lead effective change management to minimize data center related disruptions
  • Ensure data center colocation equipment is operated per procedure to maintain maximum uptime and maintenance activities occur in a safe manner
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate tracking of incidents and uptime matched with robust root cause analysis
  • Ensure effective and efficient use of space, power, cooling, and CAPEX, developing, tracking, and reporting accurate space planning and use
  • Foster excellent communication between the data center and other teams, promoting goodwill and collaboration
  • Drive continuous improvement across teams through standardized methods and cross-team collaboration
  • Develop maintenance schedules and procedures including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs)
  • Analyze energy efficiency improvement efforts at sites
  • Review and approve MOPs and SOPs for accuracy, safety, and to assess potential impact
  • Oversee maintenance activities performed by contractors to ensure they are conducted safely, correctly, and within change management guidelines
  • Ensure adherence to Oracle change management policies

Requirements

  • Proven experience in managing data center operations and engineering teams
  • Strong leadership skills with a focus on employee development and performance management
  • Experience in strategic planning and project management within a technical environment
  • Excellent communication skills to facilitate collaboration between teams and stakeholders
  • Ability to analyze and improve energy efficiency in data center operations
  • Knowledge of change management processes and incident resolution
  • Familiarity with maintenance scheduling and operational procedures
