About the position

The Director of Data Engineering & Analytics is responsible for leading the strategic execution of data initiatives at O'Reilly, focusing on leveraging data as a governed asset. This role encompasses overseeing data engineering, business intelligence, enterprise data warehousing, and analytics, while collaborating with various business areas to deliver comprehensive data solutions. The Director will establish a strong engineering discipline, manage a diverse team, and drive the implementation of key technology and architecture decisions across the data platform ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strong leadership and vision for the organization's data platform and analytics initiatives.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of data warehouse principles, analytics, and reporting.
  • Build and lead high-performing teams in data engineering and analytics.
  • Encourage teamwork and knowledge sharing across departments and countries.
  • Establish engineering best practices, emphasizing data quality and governance.
  • Manage projects to deliver data solutions on time and within budget.
  • Foster a data-driven culture and promote data literacy throughout the organization.
  • Create a comprehensive business intelligence and analytics strategy aligned with business goals.
  • Design and implement scalable data infrastructure to support international operations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the data engineering and analytics team.
  • Develop change management plans to drive adoption of new data solutions.
  • Implement data governance framework to manage data access and compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in data warehouse, data migration, data engineering, and analytics.
  • 6+ years of successful data engineering or analytics team management experience.
  • 5+ years managing a team of data analysts/engineers/scientists.
  • 3+ years managing a team of architect/principal/staff/lead level team members.
  • Deep understanding of SQL and related databases.
  • Experience with cloud data warehouse platforms and data streaming tools.
  • Strong understanding of data architecture and design principles.
  • Experience with data visualization and BI tools like Tableau, Looker, Domo.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Domain experience in retail and the auto parts industry.
  • Experience with medallion architecture/data tiers.
  • Knowledge of advanced analytics and machine learning techniques.
  • Hands-on experience with GCP, AWS, or Azure cloud platforms.
