About the position

The Director of Development and Marketing at the Museum of Science and Curiosity (MOSAC) is a pivotal role that combines leadership, strategic planning, and community engagement to enhance the museum's fundraising efforts and marketing initiatives. This position is designed for an individual who is passionate about making a difference in the community and is eager to contribute to the success of Sacramento's newest attraction. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Director will be an integral part of the executive team, responsible for spearheading revenue generation through individual and corporate gifts, as well as orchestrating annual giving and membership campaigns. In this role, the Director will develop and implement a comprehensive development and marketing strategy that aligns with MOSAC's mission and goals. This includes collaborating closely with the Executive Director, fellow executive team members, and the Board of Directors to advance the museum's position within the community and to foster broader awareness and support from donors. The Director will oversee all marketing strategies, communications, and public relations activities, ensuring that MOSAC's brand identity is effectively communicated to key stakeholders and the public. The Director will also supervise the development and marketing staff, providing mentorship and support to ensure a cohesive and high-performing team. Responsibilities include managing a portfolio of donors, executing fundraising campaigns, developing grant proposals, and creating strategic communications plans. The Director will represent MOSAC at external events, cultivate press relationships, and engage all staff in fostering a culture of philanthropy. This role requires a strong commitment to the museum's mission and the ability to work collaboratively across various levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Create a comprehensive Development strategy for MOSAC, in close collaboration with peers on the executive team, department staff, and the board of directors.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of institutions, individual donors, and corporations to secure major gifts, working closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Manage and execute all aspects of donor prospecting, relationships, and stewardship, collaborating with the ED and Board to leverage their relationships and to build new relationships with all levels of the organization.
  • Develop and execute the annual fundraising campaign.
  • Identify and develop grant proposals for submission.
  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance MOSAC's brand identity; broaden awareness of its mission; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.
  • Oversee the creation of a marketing/public relations strategy that will create and deepen relationships with targeted external audiences, including the media and key influencers.
  • Represent the organization at external events, coordinating closely with the ED.
  • Create and execute donor-focused events, working closely with the Manager of Events.
  • Oversee development of all print and digital communications including the annual report, marketing collateral materials, the website and digital media.
  • Oversee all aspects of PR and media opportunities that align with our organizational strategy and goals, and ensure that talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material is created as needed.
  • Cultivate, engage, and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of programs, special events, public announcements, and other promotional opportunities.
  • Engage all staff in understanding and cultivating a culture of philanthropy and brand identity.
  • Create and adhere to departmental budgets.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Communications, or related field required; advanced degree desirable.
  • Minimum five years of experience and proven results in fundraising for a nonprofit.
  • A minimum of three years supervisory experience.
  • Proven track record of hiring, training, and developing a cohesive and high performing team.
  • Experience planning, leading, and running development projects including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/Board of Directors.
  • Experience executing development projects, including coordinating peers to achieve desired outcome and reporting group progress to Senior Management/Board of Directors.
  • Experience and established credibility in presenting materials to external audiences.
  • Outstanding verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate in a variety of settings with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, supervisory skills and consistently demonstrates high level of integrity and professionalism in dealing with staff, board of directors, suppliers, and community members.
  • Familiarity with Blackbaud Altru or similar CRM.
  • Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications.
  • Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers, across different levels of the organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
