About the position

At USAA, we are dedicated to facilitating the financial security of millions of U.S. military members and their families. We are seeking a Director of Product Ownership (DPO) to join our Policy Modernization team, where you will play a pivotal role in transforming our Property and Casualty (P&C) insurance offerings. This position involves managing our cutting-edge document platform, PICS, which is supported by our new policy administration system, Guidewire, and underwriting, pricing, and rating software, Earnix. As the DPO Director, you will be responsible for defining the portfolio of work that drives innovation in insurance communications and ensures that our products meet the evolving needs of our members. In this role, you will structure ambiguous problems and take decisive action to solve them, working effectively with diverse teams to develop optimal solutions. You will establish trust-based relationships with peers in Modernization to enhance the Policy Modernization initiative. Your responsibilities will include driving requirements discussions with stakeholders and executives, ensuring that requirements are clearly defined and understood by both business and technical teams, and maintaining a prioritized product roadmap for future program increments. You will also define strategic application health goals in collaboration with IT partners, facilitate open communication among partners and stakeholders, and strengthen relationships with integrating partners for both Modernization and Legacy products. As a leader, you will guide a team that represents business stakeholders across multiple agile teams, ensuring that business needs are effectively communicated and addressed. Your expertise in various delivery methodologies, particularly Agile, will be crucial in delivering business value and managing risks, dependencies, and impediments throughout the project lifecycle. This position requires a commitment to continuous improvement and the ability to mentor and coach Product Owners, ensuring adherence to enterprise processes and standards. You will oversee a flexible work environment, requiring in-office presence four days a week, with potential locations including San Antonio, TX, Plano, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, or Tampa, FL. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Direct a team that works on Agile efforts, including complex multi-year journeys across multiple Agile teams, programs, and portfolios.
  • Drive creativity and ingenuity among the team to develop new product solutions for complex technical issues.
  • Serve as an Agile thought leader, prioritizing and delegating work assignments effectively.
  • Oversee the identification and engagement of business stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts across all Agile work levels.
  • Partner with sponsors and key stakeholders to understand needs, measures, and risks for improvement areas.
  • Provide guidance and oversight at the portfolio, program, and project levels regarding schedule, scope, and resources.
  • Teach and emphasize Agile and Waterfall principles while fostering a mindset of continuous improvement.
  • Work with the business to develop metrics for managing risk and tracking benefits and adoption (KPIs, KRIs, etc.).
  • Ensure DPOs apply knowledge and adhere to required enterprise processes, procedures, controls, and standards.
  • Coach and mentor Product Owners, building and overseeing a team through recruiting, development, retention, and performance management activities.
  • Identify, measure, monitor, and control risks associated with business activities in accordance with risk and compliance policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 8 years of experience in process improvement, project delivery, business/requirements analysis, or related operations/product line.
  • 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.
  • Hands-on experience managing stages of the software or product development life cycle.
  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated use of at least one technical software delivery methodology (i.e., Agile, Waterfall).
  • Experience in defining minimum marketable features and minimum viable products.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products and product management tools.
  • Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience in Process Engineering Methodologies, project management, and Change Management Practices.
  • Experience analyzing business requirements and identifying opportunities to streamline processes in accordance with risk management frameworks.

  • Experience within a regulated document control environment.
  • Experience leading Agile SAFe roles such as Scrum Master or DPO.
  • Proven leadership skills with conflict management experience.
