About the position

The Director of Division Business Operations at the University of Houston is responsible for overseeing the business operations within a complex division, specifically the Division of Marketing & Communications. This role involves strategic planning, budget management, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The director serves as a key resource for administrative matters and leads major projects while managing a team focused on financial and personnel operations.

Responsibilities

  • Directs overall strategic planning and the creation and implementation of the annual budget.
  • Provides financial accountability and ensures compliance with state, university, and external funding agencies.
  • Serves as a resource to dean, chairs, and directors on strategic financial and administrative matters.
  • Leads major projects, including capital construction and the creation of new departments and programs.
  • Directs procurement operations, including contracts, purchasing, and travel.
  • Oversees the administration of the subdivision's accounting records and ensures compliance with applicable policies.
  • Oversees human resource and payroll processes, including position budget management and staff performance evaluation.
  • Interprets university policies and arranges for staff training as appropriate.
  • Serves as liaison with executives regarding fiscal and operational issues.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Strong financial acumen to establish and manage budgets.
  • Understanding of careful planning and forecasting, and the importance of cost control.
  • Experience with data-driven decision-making.
  • Understanding of risk management in operations.
  • Demonstration of leadership with compliance to policies and procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines.
  • Ability to mediate conflicts and facilitate communication.
