About the position

The Director of Division Business Operations at the University of Houston is responsible for overseeing the business operations of a subdivision within a complex division. This role involves strategic planning, budget management, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The director serves as a key resource for fiscal and administrative matters, leading major projects and managing the subdivision's business staff.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the development, implementation, and administration of business operations for a subdivision.
  • Engage in strategic planning and analysis for fiscal and administrative matters.
  • Direct overall strategic planning and the creation and implementation of the annual budget.
  • Review budget and personnel reports submitted by subordinates and conduct analyses and projections.
  • Provide financial accountability and ensure compliance with state, university, and external funding agencies.
  • Oversee the subdivision's business staff in charge of financial and personnel matters.
  • Serve as a resource to dean, chairs, and directors on strategic financial and administrative matters.
  • Write policy statements and facilitate management decisions.
  • Lead major projects including capital construction and building renovation.
  • Direct procurement operations including contracts, purchasing, and travel.
  • Oversee the administration of the subdivision's accounting records.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable policies and procedures and supervise business audit reviews.
  • Oversee the administration of human resource and payroll processes for the subdivision.
  • Interpret university policies and arrange for staff training as appropriate.
  • Serve as liaison with executives and administrative offices regarding fiscal and operational issues.
  • Represent the subdivision on committees and in other administrative contexts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • 5 years of experience in business operations or a related area.
  • Strong financial acumen to establish and manage budgets.
  • Understanding of careful planning and forecasting, and the importance of cost control.
  • Experience with data-driven decision making.
  • Demonstrated understanding of risk management in operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership with compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines.
  • Ability to mediate conflicts and facilitate communication.
