About the position

The Director of Facilities Management at the University of Georgia is responsible for overseeing custodial, moving, surplus, event support, and interior pest control services across the campus. This role involves setting strategic directions, ensuring operational efficiency, managing human resources, and maintaining financial accountability for the department. The Director will lead a team of 12 direct reports and approximately 375 full-time employees, focusing on quality control and special projects as assigned by leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall managerial oversight for Building Services (custodial) and Support Services (logistics, moving, and interior pest management services).
  • Set the strategic direction for the group, ensuring operational components are performing effectively and efficiently.
  • Identify and implement best practices for the department.
  • Develop metrics to evaluate and manage performance, bringing innovation and emerging trends to the department.
  • Maintain awareness of the latest methods, products, and systems to maximize efficiency and ensure employee safety.
  • Oversee human resources management, implementation of training, and quality control.
  • Monitor staffing needs to ensure the most efficient use of resources.
  • Collaborate with FMD Human Resources to ensure proper hiring and evaluation of all assigned employees.
  • Develop and implement work standards and training that contribute to the personal and professional development of employees and maintain high quality standards.
  • Responsible for fiscal management of the Services department (operating and capital funds).
  • Plan and budget for the replacement of maintenance equipment and shop tools.
  • Coordinate with campus and community stakeholders for routine requests and special projects.
  • Interface with high-level individuals across the campus.
  • Perform special projects or duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President.
  • Serve as after-Hour Emergency Response by responding to emergencies and incidents after normal business hours, as needed, and on short notice.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree in a relevant field.
  • At least 10 years of leadership experience within a commercial/institutional facilities management or custodial management environment.
  • Master's or other advanced degree is preferred.
  • Highly developed analytical skills and strong business acumen.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and incidents after normal business hours, as needed, and on short notice.
  • Ability to function in an essential personnel role during emergencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with computerized maintenance-management software programs.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and safe work practices associated with custodial functions.
