About the position

The Director for Accounting Services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a key leadership role within the College of Arts and Sciences. This position is responsible for strategic planning, oversight, implementation, and evaluation of shared services goals and procedures related to financial operations. The Director will manage a team of accountants, oversee budget and resource allocation for various units, and ensure effective communication and collaboration across departments. This role is crucial for enhancing efficiency in accounts payable, procurement, and travel functions, while also serving as a subject matter expert for accounting and administrative staff.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic planning and oversight for shared services goals and procedures.
  • Manage a team of accountants within the Accounting Shared Services team.
  • Oversee budget, expense, and resource allocation for approximately 45 units.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements in financial operations.
  • Facilitate regular accounting meetings with departmental stakeholders.
  • Promote a culture of collegiality and clear communication across the College.
  • Manage the transition and onboarding of new departments into shared services.

Requirements

  • Master's degree with 2+ years of supervisory experience and 7+ years of relevant experience; or Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of supervisory experience and 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to write precisely and clearly.
  • Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory role and working with cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Extensive knowledge of university policies and procedures regulating the administration of sponsored projects.
  • Experience building and managing teams including hiring, training, prioritizing, organizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PeopleSoft.
