About the position

The Director for Recreational Services, West Center Operations, and Student Engagement at Winthrop University plays a pivotal role in enhancing the campus experience for students through effective management and innovative programming. Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement and Inclusive Excellence, this position is responsible for the administrative and programmatic oversight of Recreational Services and the West Center. The Director will work collaboratively with various campus partners to create engaging learning opportunities that foster student persistence and retention. This role is integral to shaping a vibrant campus culture that supports student engagement and community involvement. In terms of administration and supervision, the Director will manage all staffing aspects for Recreational Services, overseeing a team that includes the Assistant Directors for Operations and Programming, as well as West Center Facility Supervisors. The Director will establish strategic goals and objectives that align with the university's mission of enhancing student engagement and community outreach. Additionally, the Director will ensure that staff are trained in best practices for program development and service delivery, while also maintaining a focus on professional development for all staff members. The Director will also oversee the management of various facilities, including office spaces, gyms, and activity rooms, ensuring that all aspects of facility and equipment management are handled efficiently. This includes serving as the Space Use Manager for the West Center and recreational fields, and developing policies and procedures related to facility usage, membership services, and risk management. Regular inspections and maintenance coordination with Facilities Management will be part of the Director's responsibilities to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all users. Collaboration and outreach are key components of this role, as the Director will interface with other campus departments and community partners to maximize the West Center's value. This includes leading outreach efforts and supporting large-scale programming initiatives that promote leadership development and student engagement. The Director will also be responsible for budget management, developing and implementing budgets for Recreational Services and West Center Operations, and identifying revenue-generating opportunities. Finally, the Director will lead outcomes assessment efforts, providing strategic leadership in the design and continuous improvement of programs and services. This includes creating learning outcomes for key initiatives and coordinating data collection to support the department's improvement processes. The Director will also represent the division of Student Affairs on various committees and initiatives, providing leadership in the absence of the Assistant Vice President.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of staffing for Recreational Services and supervise staff including Assistant Directors and Facility Supervisors.
  • Establish and implement strategic goals and objectives that support student engagement and community involvement.
  • Develop marketing strategies and enhance the online presence for Recreational Services.
  • Ensure staff utilize best practices for program development and service delivery.
  • Oversee the management of various facilities including gyms, activity rooms, and weight rooms.
  • Serve as Space Use Manager for the West Center and recreational fields.
  • Create and implement policies and procedures for facility usage and membership services.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Management for maintenance and special events.
  • Interface with campus departments to enhance the value of the West Center to the community.
  • Lead outreach efforts and maintain partnerships with community organizations.
  • Develop and implement the budget for Recreational Services and West Center Operations.
  • Coordinate capital improvement projects and equipment purchases.
  • Direct operations and provide leadership in program design and continuous improvement.
  • Create learning outcomes for key programs and services.
  • Represent the division of Student Affairs on various committees and initiatives.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of standard practices in facility management.
  • Ability to articulate a vision for learning experiences in an academic and wellness facility.
  • Strong leadership skills in student development and staff supervision.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong presentation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Health and Physical Education, or related field.
  • At least five years of experience in facility management and member service operations.
  • Experience in a collegiate recreation setting.
  • Experience in training, supervising, and developing staff.
  • Understanding of engagement opportunities for diverse student communities.
