About the position

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is seeking applicants for an Education Program Director III (Working Title: Director for the Office of Alternative Programs) for our Deputy State Superintendent Office. The main purpose of this position is to be the NCDPI main point of contact for Alternative Schools and Programs and is a direct report to the Chief Academic Officer. This position will provide support to public school units that are managing and overseeing the operations of alternative education programs or schools within a school district, including help with determining best practices for teaching and learning, student placement, community partnerships, and ensuring compliance with regulations for students in at-risk situations and/or non-traditional learners, often requiring strong administrative skills and experience working with diverse student populations. The Director for the Office of Alternative Programs and Schools is accountable to ensure that North Carolina law and the rules and regulations of the State Board of Education are properly implemented and to ensure coordination with other offices within NCDPI that can provide support to alternative schools and programs. This position will also provide administrative governance to the alternative schools and program areas of the department under the direction of the State Superintendent. The Director for the Office of Alternative Programs and Schools will advise and make presentations to the North Carolina State Board of Education and may represent NCDPI on pertinent alternative school and program issues to state and national professional organizations, local education agencies, the General Assembly, and other governmental entities.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main point of contact for Alternative Schools and Programs.
  • Support public school units managing alternative education programs.
  • Determine best practices for teaching and learning in alternative settings.
  • Assist with student placement and community partnerships.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations for at-risk and non-traditional learners.
  • Advise and present to the North Carolina State Board of Education.
  • Represent NCDPI on alternative school and program issues to various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of research and practices used in and about alternative schools and programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations governing alternative schools and programs in North Carolina.
  • Ability to listen effectively and communicate complex topics to diverse constituent groups.
  • Ability to communicate NCDPI's efforts to community groups and the public effectively.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with various educational stakeholders.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in other states understanding state laws and regulations regarding alternative schools and programs.
