Full-time - Director

About the position

The Director for the Office of Alternative Programs at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) serves as the primary contact for alternative schools and programs. This role involves supporting public school units in managing alternative education programs, ensuring compliance with regulations, and implementing best practices for diverse student populations. The director will also provide administrative governance and represent NCDPI in various educational forums.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the main point of contact for alternative schools and programs within NCDPI.
  • Support public school units in managing and overseeing alternative education programs.
  • Determine best practices for teaching and learning in alternative settings.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations for at-risk and non-traditional learners.
  • Advise and present to the North Carolina State Board of Education on alternative education issues.
  • Coordinate with other NCDPI offices to provide support to alternative schools and programs.
  • Represent NCDPI at state and national professional organizations and governmental entities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education or special education with six years of public education experience, including four years in an administrative role; or a Doctoral degree with four years of public education experience, including three years in an administrative role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of research and practices related to alternative schools and programs.
  • Understanding of state and federal laws governing alternative education in North Carolina.
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex topics to diverse groups.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with various educational stakeholders.
