About the position

The Director for the Office of Research & Promising Practices at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is responsible for overseeing research projects aimed at improving academic performance in public schools. This role involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including public school units and internal offices, to provide research support and evidence-based solutions to educational challenges. The Director will lead the design and implementation of studies, analyze data, and share best practices with educational leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee research projects within the Department of Public Instruction.
  • Work closely with public school units and stakeholders to address academic challenges.
  • Support the design and implementation of studies evaluating academic programs and policies.
  • Collaborate with staff to implement data collection and analysis.
  • Formulate research reports in consultation with the Chief Accountability Officer.
  • Share best practices with the Superintendent and State Board of Education.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in education or special education from an accredited institution and six years of experience in public education, including four years in an administrative capacity; or a Doctoral degree in education or special education and four years of experience in public education including three years in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to systematically collect, analyze, organize, and disseminate quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Experience in the development and execution of grant applications.
  • Experience writing research reports for a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead program development sessions.
  • Ability to foster deep working relationships with stakeholders throughout the education continuum.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5-10 years of experience in education (higher Ed or K-12).
  • Working knowledge of North Carolina education landscape, educational research and evaluation theory and practice.
  • Relationship builder with a persistent and enthusiastic student-centric mentality.
  • Excellent presentation and written and verbal communication skills.
