About the position

The Director of Fraud Strategy & Analytics at USAA is a pivotal role that focuses on leading a highly analytical team dedicated to providing decision support across various business areas within the organization. This position is not just about managing a team; it involves being a strategic partner to the business, applying advanced mathematical and statistical techniques, and utilizing innovative analytical approaches to derive actionable insights that align with business objectives. The director will oversee the evaluation of business problems, coordinate analytical methodologies, and ensure that findings and recommendations are well-documented and presented effectively. In this role, the director will also be responsible for monitoring and adopting emerging technologies that can enhance the application of scientific methodologies and quantitative analytical approaches. This includes identifying resource needs, such as IT investments or additional analysts, and providing justifications for these needs. The director will set the analytic direction based on a deep understanding of the business environment and strategies, creating a roadmap that influences business decisions and drives change. Furthermore, the director will lead efforts to build USAA's core analytics capabilities and processes, ensuring that the team is recognized as experts in decision science support. This involves recruiting, developing, and retaining top talent, as well as mentoring team members in mathematical skills and statistical techniques. The director will also maintain a strong knowledge of data analysis tools and industry practices, ensuring that the team is equipped to tackle complex data challenges and leverage insights effectively. Overall, this position is crucial for advancing USAA's mission of facilitating financial security for military members and their families through data-driven decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a highly analytical staff to provide decision support across the enterprise.
  • Collaborate with other analytical leaders to execute the strategic direction of the business using mathematical and statistical techniques.
  • Oversee and coordinate analytical tasks including evaluation of business problems and presentation of findings.
  • Monitor and adopt emerging technologies that can enhance scientific methodologies and quantitative approaches.
  • Identify additional resource needs and provide business rationale for these needs.
  • Set the analytic direction based on understanding of business strategies and environment.
  • Build and oversee a team through recruiting, development, retention, and performance management.
  • Mentor team members in mathematical skills and statistical techniques to drive fact-based decision-making.
  • Maintain knowledge of data analysis tools and industry practices to connect insights to business problems.
  • Research and pursue industry-leading practices in data and analytics to advance team knowledge.
  • Work with IT/CTO partners to advance new data and platforms corresponding to evolving skill sets.
  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified and controlled.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative analytics field or 4 years of related experience in statistics, mathematics, or quantitative analytics.
  • 8 years of experience in a decision support analytic function, or an advanced degree with 6 years of experience.
  • 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.
  • Expert skills in mathematical and statistical techniques to influence business strategy.
  • Modern knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, and relevant industry data & methods.
  • Experience with new and emerging data sets and incorporation into new insights.

Nice-to-haves

  • Several years of direct oversight of a fraud analytics team and responsibility for fraud losses.
  • Subject Matter Expert in product areas with experience in building fraud prevention strategies.
  • Experience in multiple coding languages (SQL, SAS, Python) and visualization tools (Tableau).
  • Proven thought leadership in developing unique fraud attack solutions.
  • Experience in developing reporting environments to maintain fraud losses.
