About the position

The Director of Product Development at NYX Professional Makeup is a pivotal role that combines a passion for beauty with strategic oversight in product innovation. This position is not just for someone who loves makeup; it requires a keen eye for color, aesthetics, and an understanding of current trends and cultural influences. The Director will manage a small team of 1-2 direct reports and will be responsible for the comprehensive development and management of all product categories, including new launches, existing product extensions, and limited edition collaborations. In this role, the Director will engage in high-level critical thinking and strategic problem-solving to navigate potential roadblocks and ensure successful product launches. As the Category Lead, the Director will maintain a thorough understanding of the product portfolio, including top sellers and areas for growth, while fostering strong communication with marketing counterparts. Mentorship of product development managers will be a key aspect, guiding them through the product development process and ensuring that storytelling and concept building are effectively executed. The Director will oversee the entire product development process, ensuring operational excellence from kickoff to launch. This includes managing the costing process, seasonal milestones, and troubleshooting issues that arise with the AVP of Product Development. The role requires collaboration with various departments to ensure timely and high-quality product delivery, while also driving innovation through vendor relationships and market analysis. The Director will present category launch plans to management and stakeholders, attend industry events, and ensure smooth operations between the product development and operational teams.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end product development process for new and existing products.
  • Collaborate with all departments to ensure operational excellence in product launches.
  • Oversee the costing process and seasonal milestones for product categories.
  • Troubleshoot key issues with the AVP of Product Development.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with the Development and Operations team.
  • Partner with AVP PD to explore new innovations and technologies for future developments.
  • Work closely with Marketing on strategy and concept ideation.
  • Build relationships with vendors to scout for new innovations and cost efficiencies.
  • Conduct comprehensive analysis on product trends and identify white space opportunities.
  • Drive vendor relationships to discover new product/package opportunities.
  • Present category launch plans to management and internal stakeholders.
  • Attend key industry meetings and events as needed.
  • Ensure smooth collaboration between Operational and Product Development teams.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of related business experience in product development or a similar field.
  • In-depth knowledge of product development processes and consumer packaged goods.
  • Technical understanding of formulas and shades in the beauty industry.
  • Experience in the beauty industry or consumer packaged goods is preferred.
  • Strong collaborative leadership skills to guide and mentor teams.
  • Excellent project management skills to oversee multiple initiatives.
  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills to manage timelines and deliverables.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated competencies in leadership, entrepreneurial management, and innovation.
