About the position

The Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Google will lead the team responsible for managing relationships with California's government entities, including the Governor's Office and State Legislature. This role involves advocating for Google's interests, monitoring regulatory issues, and developing partnerships to foster a favorable business environment. The position requires a strategic approach to public policy, integrating it with business objectives while engaging with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Set the strategy for California and manage a team of three government affairs professionals.
  • Synthesize Google's positions and educate policymakers on key issues.
  • Advocate before relevant elected officials and public entities.
  • Monitor policy issues of importance to Google and build relationships with the Governor's Office and the Legislature.
  • Create a positive regulatory environment to enable innovation and growth.
  • Execute public affairs strategies and campaigns that build relationships and strengthen Google's reputation.
  • Interface with trade associations, industry partners, non-profit groups, and other stakeholders to support Google's policy positions.
  • Devise executive engagement plans with legislators and regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in government relations, public policy, or related fields.
  • Experience working in government affairs, political campaigns, or lobbying in California.

Nice-to-haves

  • JD or equivalent degree.
  • Experience with state/local government or leading public affairs work for third-party organizations.
  • Experience managing executives with strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Internet/technology policy and a commitment to keeping the Internet open and free.
  • Ability to integrate public policy with business strategy.
