The Huck Institutes of The Life Sciences (Huck) at Penn State University is seeking a new Director to lead its mission of advancing interdisciplinary excellence in life sciences research and education. The Huck is one of the largest institutes at Penn State, with an annual expenditure exceeding $20 million and a substantial endowment. The Director will play a pivotal role in guiding life sciences research at Penn State, collaborating with Deans and Directors to align with the University's strategic research priorities. The Huck comprises four main institutes—Genomics, Plant Sciences, Ecology, and Neurosciences—and 28 centers of excellence, engaging faculty across all colleges, including the College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. The Director will oversee a diverse portfolio of research initiatives and graduate training programs, supporting approximately 275 graduate students and managing six intercollege graduate degree programs. The Huck is equipped with eleven state-of-the-art shared technology facilities, including advanced capabilities in genomics, metabolomics, and cryo-electron microscopy, among others. The Director will be supported by an Executive Team, including an Associate Director and several part-time Associate Directors, who will collaborate to implement the Huck's vision and manage day-to-day operations. The responsibilities of the Director include providing vision and leadership in research and graduate training, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, chairing advisory committees, identifying funding opportunities, enhancing graduate education, and serving as a liaison with external life sciences organizations. The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. and have a strong background in research and teaching, with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as fundraising and resource development.
