About the position

The Director of Human Resources at Ohio History Connection is responsible for leading and managing the institution's HR functions. This role involves developing HR strategies, overseeing employment-related operations, and ensuring compliance with labor laws. The Director serves as the point of contact for employee relations and is tasked with addressing performance concerns, developing succession plans, and ensuring that HR activities align with the organization's mission and strategic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement plans for various HR matters such as compensation, benefits, FMLA, health and safety, professional development, recruiting, hiring and onboarding, retention, and DEAI.
  • Oversee all HR initiatives, systems, and tactics.
  • Set strategy and direction for the organization by engaging with peers on the leadership team.
  • Work with staff to set strategy, priorities, and tactics for the HR department.
  • Cooperate with state offices, academic institutions, museums, and community organizations.
  • Develop a collaborative team that embodies the organization's Mission, Vision, and Core Values.
  • Provide timely feedback and coaching to direct reports and staff.
  • Create and manage the HR budget in alignment with organizational priorities.
  • Support all employees, volunteers, interns, and work-study students throughout the organization.
  • Serve as the point of contact for employee relations and address performance and behavior concerns.
  • Stay abreast of changing employment laws and develop policies for compliance.
  • Coordinate with legal counsel on employee and policy matters as needed.
  • Report to senior leadership by analyzing data and utilizing HR metrics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or relevant field from an accredited institution.
  • Ten years of relevant working experience.
  • A minimum of five years of progressive management of full-time staff.
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws and regulations at federal, state, and local levels.
  • Strong knowledge and implementation of HR best practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree and/or SHRM/HRCI certification.
  • Experience managing managers.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing strategic plans.
  • Ability to oversee multiple programs and departments simultaneously.
  • Experience with project management processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and the public, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Experience with creating and managing complex budgets.
