About the position

The Director II of Research Operations and Planning at the University of Missouri-Columbia will lead the Technology Advancement Office (TAO) in facilitating the commercialization of research innovations. This role involves directing staff, developing strategic plans, overseeing technology licensing, and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders to enhance the university's research impact.

Responsibilities

• Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve organizational goals.
• Develop and implement strategic plans for the department in collaboration with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research.
• Oversee the complete contract life cycle and portfolio for the technology licensing program.
• Identify and resolve strategic issues affecting the overall functioning of the department.
• Consult and advise with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research on significant matters.
• Exercise initiative and leadership to accomplish licensing goals and objectives.
• Provide oversight, training, and mentoring to licensing/commercialization staff.
• Identify and negotiate agreements, licensees, and contracts, and evaluate portfolio inventions.
• Ensure compliance with university-wide and campus policies.

Requirements

• Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• At least 5 years of experience in a related field.
• In-depth understanding of industry research contract drafting and negotiation.
• Advanced knowledge of legal aspects related to intellectual property, contracts, and licensing agreements.
• Strong negotiation and communication skills.
• Proven ability to develop and implement complex contracting strategies.

Nice-to-haves

• J.D. or equivalent legal experience.
• 10+ years of experience in intellectual property licensing and corporate R&D contracting.
• Knowledge of industry trends, market dynamics, and emerging technologies.
