About The Position

The Director, Intellectual Property Licensing at Sony Music Entertainment is responsible for overseeing a team of IPL Analysts and Coordinators to ensure efficient management of mechanical licensing and publishing royalties for designated Sony labels. This role involves negotiating licenses, reviewing contracts, calculating royalty rates, and managing copyright registrations, all while serving as a liaison between various internal departments and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience with music publishing clearances, licensing, and royalties administration.
  • Multiple years of supervisory/managerial experience preferred.
  • Ability to handle complex and time-sensitive projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills; basic understanding of royalty accounting concepts.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Demonstrated experience with royalty accounting, rights management, and financial processes.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and train a team of Analysts and Coordinators to ensure proper clearance, licensing, and payment for all assigned label releases.
  • Serve as a primary liaison to various internal departments and external customers regarding publishing and copyright matters.
  • Support management of and adherence to the IPL Department's best practices, policies, and procedures regarding licensing, royalties, and registrations.
  • Contribute to the Department's ongoing systems and strategic initiatives to adapt to evolving requirements.
  • Act as the point person for publishing license negotiations with publishers.
  • Coordinate and complete special projects to further departmental goals as assigned by SVP IPL Licensing.
  • Oversee IP Licensing Coordinators to ensure timely and accurate processing of licenses and registrations.
  • Confirm songwriter and publisher ownership splits for assigned songs.
  • Supervise IP Licensing Analysts in rights clearances and ensure accurate calculation and processing of publisher royalties.
