About the position

The Director of IT Program Management for the Corporate Functions Portfolio at Schwab is responsible for leading and executing technology projects that support the company's business goals. This role involves managing the overall health of the corporate portfolios, which include Finance, Human Resources, and Corporate Risk, Compliance, Legal, and Audit. The Director will collaborate across the organization to ensure efficient project execution and delivery, utilizing Agile methodologies to drive strategic initiatives and manage risks effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise leadership and execution over the corporate portfolios.
  • Act as a thought partner to project sponsors and clients; collaborate to identify unarticulated needs and improve business benefits.
  • Partner with Portfolio Stakeholders to develop a common understanding of business strategy, product roadmaps, technology teams' capacity, and Agile practices.
  • Effectively interpret project resource needs and adjust as required to ensure business outcomes.
  • Develop effective risk mitigation plans and seamlessly execute; adjust risk management approach as new risks arise.
  • Drive portfolio planning and manage the portfolio intake process for new work to be executed/delivered.
  • Provide supervision and direction to project teams to ensure successful execution and quality project documentation.
  • Oversee the management of projects and initiatives to ensure delivery of lean business case outcomes and adherence to established PPM standards.
  • Manage staff performance by setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, and developing improvement plans as needed.
  • Organize teams in value streams/ART's; manage strategic demand in the portfolio Kanban to ensure continuous value delivery.
  • Facilitate discussions on appropriate levels of run vs grow, product lifecycle, and software spend in the portfolio.
  • Manage and communicate portfolio changes; facilitate trade-off decisions in the portfolio.
  • Provide transparency on forecast demand and actuals for all grow work in the portfolio.
  • Manage third-party portfolio spend to ensure maximum value and create cost transparency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 10+ years as a project manager, managing multiple large, sophisticated, and cross-functional projects, with emphasis on data, systems, technical environments, and product development.
  • Strong business, technology, and data acumen; able to manage multiple large, complex, and cross-functional technology projects.
  • Expert experience in leading programs or projects in a large enterprise environment with multi-million dollar budgets.
  • Ability to communicate tough messages and statuses effectively for various stakeholders while tying those messages to business objectives.

Nice-to-haves

  • 15+ years in technology, financial services preferred.
  • Experience in scaled agile practices (SAFe).
  • Ability to work with senior business and technology leaders for success.
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience in use of MS project, Jira, Confluence, Rally, and SharePoint preferred.
