About the position

The Director Market Operations at WellMed Healthcare, part of the Optum family of businesses, plays a crucial role in providing strategic direction and leadership for enterprise-wide market initiatives. This position is responsible for collaborating with the Market Vice President to facilitate the creation and execution of local market strategies and action plans. The Director will engage in various operational aspects including planning, budgeting, forecasting, and facility planning, ensuring that all activities align with the organization's mission and values. In this role, the Director will direct and facilitate the evaluation, assessment, planning, implementation, data collection, reporting, and tracking of initiatives aimed at creating market efficiencies and improving medical cost control. This is achieved while maintaining or enhancing the quality of care and service provided to patients. The Director will work closely with operational business units, consultants, stakeholders, and training teams to develop and implement programs, policies, and procedures that continually improve market operations. Additionally, the Director will assist with long-term planning priorities, ensuring that activities are integrated into the strategic direction of the organization. This position requires strong leadership skills, as the Director will supervise market personnel and participate in the management team directed by the Vice President of Market Operations. The Director will also be responsible for providing regular reports to the executive team and stakeholders regarding initiatives, ensuring that stakeholder and patient needs are met, and maintaining effective network support services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision for market personnel as assigned and participate on the management team directed by the Vice President of Market Operations.
  • Participate in strategic and operational planning for the assigned market(s) and facilitate the execution of the plan within that assigned market.
  • Engage in planning, budgeting, forecasting, facility planning, and reporting for each of the assigned markets as directed by the VP of Market Operations.
  • Continually seek ways to improve job efficiencies.
  • Create and execute a comprehensive market strategy, developing an assessment of competitors and local market trends, benefit design, and a marketing plan as well as a network development plan.
  • Recommend and direct the assessment, design, development, planning, implementation, data collection/reporting, evaluation, and tracking of market program initiatives.
  • Direct data collection and reporting activities with information system partners to ensure reporting requirements are captured through each program phase, when applicable.
  • Provide regular reports to the executive team and stakeholders regarding initiatives.
  • Direct the timely preparation of reports and records for dissemination to stakeholders.
  • Direct program modifications based on evaluation results to ensure stakeholder and patient needs are met and to ensure stakeholder and/or customer satisfaction.
  • Provide cross-functional leadership across the health plan by maintaining open communication, identifying and resolving cross-functional issues, and continually improving cross-functional policies/procedures/workflows and support systems.
  • Collaborate with medical, network, and financial staff to identify and resolve medical cost issues within each assigned market.
  • Monitor compliance with all organizational metrics (Financial, Clinical, Customer Service, Membership, Retention, etc.).
  • Provide training to management to facilitate effective cross-functional working relationships to ensure applicable metrics are met.
  • Maintain effective network support services by working with the Vice President of Market Operations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Healthcare Administration or related field required (8 additional years of comparable work experience may substitute for a bachelor's degree).
  • Understanding of medical care delivery, network management, and local market dynamics.
  • Eight or more years of related management experience, including employee supervision and development, budget oversight, and strategic planning.
  • Understanding of financial performance for the total market, including staff budgeting and monitoring, as well as risk management with risk groups.
  • Solid management and supervisory skills, including employee selection, training, coaching, and development.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interface effectively with all levels of staff and a wide range of external stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with effective follow-through.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
