About the position

The Director of Marketing and Communications at UTHealth Houston is responsible for developing and overseeing a comprehensive marketing strategy for the Heart and Vascular program. This role involves collaboration with program leaders and faculty to create high-quality communications for various stakeholders, manage marketing campaigns, and enhance the program's brand and reputation. The position requires advanced communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with a focus on strategic marketing functions that align with the university's goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and oversees all strategic marketing functions, including marketing campaigns for specific programs and initiatives.
  • Manages the brand and reputation for the Heart and Vascular programs, including Adult and Pediatric Cardiology, Heart and Vascular Surgery, and Advanced Heart Failure.
  • Responsible for overall project management, project budgets, timelines, and the evaluation of project work.
  • Participates in the development of the marketing budget and maintains expenditures within the established budget.
  • Works collaboratively to support the Office of Public Affairs Media Relations team to maximize media opportunities that will enhance the program's image.
  • Works collaboratively with the UT Physicians marketing team to ensure alignment with clinical marketing strategies and activities.
  • Updates and maintains the departments' websites, adhering to university brand standards.
  • Develops and implements internal publications and announcements, utilizing both print and electronic tactics.
  • Has conversations with faculty, staff, and other appropriate sources, such as donors, patients, and executive leadership-sometimes concerning sensitive information.
  • Writes web content and articles for publication when needed.
  • Serves as editor and/or content manager of various communication vehicles: print brochures, internal communications, web publications, and/or social media channels.
  • May coordinate internal communications campaigns.
  • May coordinate and/or collaborate on paid advertising campaigns (digital and/or traditional).
  • May interact with corporate or community representatives as a representative of UTHealth Houston.
  • Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regard to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
  • Responsible for the design, execution, and effectiveness of a system of internal controls that provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded, and financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least a bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, or related field.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or a related area.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven feature writing and news writing skills.
  • Strong knowledge of AP Style.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
  • Functionary understanding of digital marketing, including SEM and social media strategies.
  • Knowledge of content management systems preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a healthcare setting and as a marketing director or supervisor is preferred.
