About the position

The Director of Marketing & Communications at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego will lead the museum's marketing strategy to enhance visibility, engagement, and attendance while promoting its mission of showcasing contemporary art and culture. This role requires a blend of high-level leadership and hands-on administration, focusing on strategic planning, brand management, digital marketing, content creation, community engagement, audience development, budget management, and team leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies to increase awareness, drive attendance, and promote exhibitions, programs, and events.
  • Manage and oversee the museum's brand identity, ensuring consistency across all platforms and communications.
  • Lead digital marketing efforts, including social media, email campaigns, website content, and online advertising.
  • Collaborate with curators and educators to create compelling content that highlights exhibitions, artists, and programs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local artists, art organizations, and the community.
  • Analyze visitor data and market trends to identify target audiences and develop strategies for audience engagement and membership growth.
  • Develop and manage the marketing budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources to achieve marketing goals.
  • Supervise and mentor the marketing team, providing guidance and support to foster professional growth, creativity, and goal accomplishment.
  • Establish key performance indicators to measure the success of marketing initiatives and report on outcomes to museum leadership.
  • Attend and work special events, including weekends and/or after regular business hours, as needed.

Requirements

  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful marketing campaigns.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing tools and analytics with experience in social media strategy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Passion for contemporary art and culture with knowledge of current trends and key players in the field.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing a team.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and build relationships within the community.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Arts Administration, or a related field, and 10 years' recent relevant experience in marketing, preferably in the arts or cultural sector, or any equivalent education and experience.
  • Master's degree preferred.
