About the position

Under general supervision, The Director of Medical Staff Services (DMSS) provides leadership, management, and daily operational oversight of the medical staff office. The DMSS serves as an essential link between senior management and the Medical Staff to enhance communication. The DMSS works collaboratively with the Chief of Staff, Medical Board, and additional medical leaders to plan, organize, and maintain the responsibilities and functions of the MSO to meet organizational goals while adhering to requirements set in place by regulatory and accrediting bodies.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, formulates and recommends policies, procedures, programs and other strategies that will further the objectives and requirements of the Medical Staff organization.
  • Coordinates and maintains Medical Staff Organization governance documents such as medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, related documents and policies and procedures of the MSO.
  • Coordinates implementation of all approved programs, projects, and major activities of the Medical Staff organization.
  • Administers the centralized credentialing and privileging process for new applicants, initial appointment, professional practice evaluation, ongoing professional practice evaluation, and reappointments to the Medical Staff.
  • Educates and directs Medical Staff officers, Department Chairmen, Committee Chairmen and members and other health care professionals in the development of mechanisms to assess physician and AHP performance.
  • Carries out specific tasks assigned by the Medical Board and/or Chief of Staff or Senior Management.
  • Oversees the planning, implementation, execution, and evaluation of special projects.
  • Monitors environmental surveillance, communication, practitioner database, meeting coordination/management, practitioner competency systems, audit activities, and administrative responsibility for Medical Staff Office personnel.
  • Manages fiscal responsibility for the Medical Staff Office, including hospital cost center budget plus independent Medical Staff organization funds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or combination of relevant education and experience) preferred.
  • 5+ years progressive experience in Medical Staff management, credentialing, and privileging.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of medico-legal issues and laws, regulatory agency requirements and standards.
  • Demonstrated effective and responsive interpersonal and management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal and written.
  • High-degree of independent judgment, problem solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Daily problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Professional Medical Staff Management (CPMSM) by the National Association of Medical Staff Services preferred.
  • Certified Professional Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) accepted.
