About the position

The Director of MEP (Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing) Operations at Bala Consulting Engineers will play a pivotal role in expanding the engineering practice groups in the New England region. This position requires collaboration with senior staff members and leaders across the enterprise to enhance Bala's reputation and market presence. The Director will be responsible for driving both top and bottom-line results, ensuring that the company continues to provide best-in-class service while fostering a cohesive and collaborative work environment that aligns with Bala's culture in the Boston office. In this leadership role, the Director will develop and manage client relationships, ensuring that the firm meets its revenue and profit goals. This includes establishing operational KPIs that drive growth and accountability, as well as contributing to strategic planning and annual operating budgets. The Director will work closely with the Director of Business Development to support direct sales efforts, including proposal generation, contract negotiations, and maintaining client relationships. The ideal candidate will possess a strong professional network and a proven track record in project management and design, particularly in sectors such as Commercial Development, Multifamily, Life Sciences, and Education. The Director of MEP Operations will also be responsible for building and supporting a highly engaged team, identifying high-performing staff, and providing career advancement opportunities. Clear communication regarding operational practices, goals, and performance will be essential to maintain a motivated workforce. This role is crucial for enhancing Bala's visibility and reputation as a leading engineering firm, competing nationally with other top firms.

Responsibilities

  • Expand engineering practice groups in the New England region.
  • Collaborate with office senior staff and other leaders across the enterprise.
  • Develop and manage client relationships to ensure best-in-class service.
  • Drive established project management practices to ensure project profitability.
  • Work with the Director of Business Development on direct sales efforts.
  • Develop short and long-term strategic plans and annual operating budgets.
  • Contribute to meeting or exceeding specific revenue and profit goals.
  • Define and refine operational KPIs that drive bottom line growth.
  • Build and support a highly engaged and collaborative work environment.
  • Identify high performing staff members and provide career path and advancement plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is required.
  • Professional Engineering License (PE) is required.
  • 15+ years of experience in the industry with a proven track record in project management and design.
  • Experience in Commercial Development, Multifamily, Life Sciences, Public or Private Education, and Corporate facilities is ideal.
  • Highly technical engineering skills with sound business and financial acumen.
  • Proven ability to build strong client relationships and establish rapport quickly.
  • Broad experience in developing and managing high performance teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to evaluate talent and hire proficient staff.
  • Superior written and verbal communication, listening, and project management skills.
