About the position

The Director of Engineering for the IoT 15.4 Protocol Software organization at Silicon Labs is responsible for leading and expanding the 15.4 organization, overseeing software research and development for critical technologies in the IoT software team. This role involves managing teams across multiple locations, mentoring team members, and collaborating with various stakeholders to set strategic direction for the 15.4 portfolio, which includes Zigbee, OpenThread, and Multiprotocol software.

Responsibilities

  • Provide top-notch leadership and people management for the team
  • Grow the team across geographical locations as required to meet business needs
  • Manage and mentor team members as a player coach
  • Work with Standards Alliances, Product Management, and Business teams to set and manage strategic direction for the 15.4 portfolio
  • Be a technical leader on 15.4 software portfolio development
  • Lead the management team through agile delivery processes
  • Plan for team delivery of complex new features based on capacity and productivity
  • Balance innovation with execution to ensure timely project delivery
  • Drive new process changes within IoT Platform Software for more efficient execution.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of leading software engineering teams
  • 10+ years of hands-on embedded software development
  • Substantial and proven C programming knowledge
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and experience with product development strategy
  • Strong background in highly resource-constrained, real-time, embedded environments
  • Experience with Assembly Language for at least one MCU (ARM, RISC-V, AVR, MSP430, 8051 or HC08)
  • Experience writing and developing networking/protocol stack software
  • Experience with one or more RTOS - Free RTOS, uc/OS, Zephyr
  • Detailed understanding and hands-on experience in software development lifecycle and methodologies
  • Experience in use of modern project management tools (Confluence, Jira, Portfolio Manager, MS Project, etc.)
  • Experience with DevOps CI/CD environments and software release management practices
  • Proven track record of leading the interviewing and hiring of new full-time engineers and managers
  • Experience managing Software Engineering Managers
  • Experience working within a global organization
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to cover a breadth of audience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working at a semiconductor company
  • Basic understanding of hardware IP architecture, development and verification
  • Radio firmware experience at the PHY/MAC layers
  • Specific hands-on experience with Zigbee, OpenThread, Bluetooth
  • Experience working with standards bodies
