About the position

The Director of Accounting and Financial Analyst at Furman University plays a crucial role in the Finance & Administration division, overseeing complex accounting functions and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. This position involves significant participation in the University's annual financial and retirement plan audits, as well as managing various accounting, tax, and reconciliation processes. The Director also supervises staff and contributes to the overall financial health of the institution.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains integrity and accuracy of the chart of accounts.
  • Validates daily general ledger and Raiser's Edge integrations into Workday, including investigating and correcting errors.
  • Maintains and updates crosswalk mapping from legacy chart of accounts to Workday account structure.
  • Supports the University's Financial Data Model (FDM) in Workday, including long-range planning and budgeting software.
  • Reviews and approves operational transactions such as journal entries, ad hoc bank transactions, and customer invoices over $1,000.
  • Supervises payroll and reviews all on-cycle and off-cycle payrolls.
  • Works with Payroll Manager to troubleshoot complex payroll errors and implement solutions.
  • Manages the University's compensation budgets for faculty and staff, including establishing and substantiating funding sources.
  • Analyzes and adjusts budgets at the beginning of the fiscal year and monitors payroll budget variances.
  • Prepares bond reimbursement requests and records accounting entries related to debt and unspent bond funds.
  • Advises departments on accounting and procedural issues.
  • Supports the annual audit by updating internal control procedures and preparing lead schedules.
  • Answers various surveys and requests for financial information as assigned.
  • Provides support and direction to two direct subordinates, including planning for their professional development.
  • Reviews staff work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.
  • Establishes and communicates work procedures and recommends improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with five or more years' experience in Accounting; higher education preferred.
  • Management experience in an accounting environment.
  • Relevant experience in payroll management including payroll processing, regulations, and systems.
  • Systems experience in an accounting environment and advanced knowledge in working with spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present financial and non-financial information clearly and logically.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in planning and controlling non-routine activities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of accounting records.
  • High level of accuracy and strong attention to detail.
  • Superior organizational and follow-through skills.
