About the position

The Director of African and African American Studies at Western Carolina University is a tenure-track position aimed at fostering a dynamic academic environment focused on Global Black Studies. The successful candidate will lead the program, develop curriculum, teach courses, and engage in community outreach while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. This role is essential for shaping the intellectual identity of the program and ensuring a collegial atmosphere for faculty, students, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses within the Global Black Studies program and other relevant departments.
  • Develop and facilitate curriculum for the Global Black Studies minor.
  • Convening a program board of faculty, students, and community members to guide the minor.
  • Encourage student participation in high-impact practices related to Black Studies.
  • Recruit and advise students in the minor.
  • Manage the program budget and develop an assessment plan for the minor.
  • Facilitate programming related to Global Black Studies, including on-campus speakers.
  • Serve as faculty advisor for the Global Black Studies Club.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the program.

Requirements

  • PhD in Black Studies or a related discipline.
  • 2-5 years of teaching experience in higher education.
  • A scholarly record demonstrating contributions to African American, African Diaspora, or Africana studies.
  • Ability to teach an introductory interdisciplinary course on African/African American studies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Administrative experience in curriculum or program development.
  • Experience in community-based participatory research or outreach.
  • Experience in developing service learning or internship opportunities for students.
