About the position

The Director of Athletic Communications at Pepperdine University is responsible for leading the Athletic Communications team to effectively communicate the story of Pepperdine Athletics through various media channels. This role emphasizes content creation, media relations, and maintaining historical archives for assigned teams, while also overseeing the execution of home athletic events.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Athletic Communications department, managing athletic events including statistics, social media updates, and photography.
  • Write articles, game stories, previews, notes, features, and biographies for the athletics website and media dissemination.
  • Pitch stories to media and perform media relations duties, including setting up interviews and prepping broadcasters.
  • Create digital content (graphics, video, etc.) to promote athletic teams on social media platforms.
  • Supervise two full-time communications staff members and a group of student-employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Senior Associate AD for External Operations and Assistant AD.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, or equivalent subject; or equivalent combination of education and 2+ years of experience in an NCAA Division I Athletics Communications Office.
  • Minimum of three years of experience working in a college or professional Athletic Communications/Sports Information office as a full-time staff member, intern, or graduate assistant.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects).
  • Experience using common office computer applications including Google Suite and web browser applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical software (Statcrew, The Automated Scorebook, NCAA Live Stats) and design software (Adobe InDesign and Photoshop).
  • Experience working with website content management systems (Sidearm) and using social media and video in promoting athletics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in communications, sports management, journalism, or related field.
  • Minimum of three to five years of sports communications or relevant experience at the collegiate or professional level.
  • Professional knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects).
  • Experience with statistical software (Stat Crew, NCAA Genius) for various sports and proficiency in AP style writing.
