About the position

The Director of Business Operations at the University of Miami is a pivotal role responsible for evaluating, administering, and directing all business and administrative matters within the assigned department. This includes overseeing budget management, operations, and personnel administration. The Director will provide financial analysis and strategic planning, ensuring that budgetary controls are maintained in collaboration with various levels of management. Reporting directly to the Sr. Associate Vice President of Operations, the Director will implement, coordinate, and evaluate business operations for the department or division, which encompasses statistical, performance, and managerial reporting, as well as decision and budget support, capital planning, and process improvement. In this role, the Director will develop and ensure adherence to the department's annual budget in accordance with University guidelines and policies. They will participate in financial analysis and planning, monitoring and reporting on monthly budget variances, and identifying opportunities for performance improvement. The Director will advance the strategic financial plan and make recommendations to senior management on executing the department's objectives effectively. Additionally, the Director will formulate department policies and guidelines to align with the University and department mission, oversee the review and approval of all expenditures, and ensure compliance with internal controls and regulations. The position also involves human resources management, including hiring, training, and preparing performance reports for staff. The Director will create an effective control environment, conduct risk assessments, and implement and monitor controls to safeguard assets and ensure operational efficiency. This role is not limited to the responsibilities listed and may expand to include additional duties as necessary, reflecting the dynamic nature of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, administer, and direct all business and administrative matters for the assigned department.
  • Provide financial analysis and strategic planning, overseeing budgetary controls in partnership with management.
  • Direct, implement, coordinate, and evaluate business operations for the department/division.
  • Develop and ensure adherence to the department's annual budget in accordance with University guidelines.
  • Participate in financial analysis and planning, monitoring monthly budget variances and opportunities for improvement.
  • Advance the strategic financial plan and make recommendations to senior management.
  • Formulate department policies and guidelines to carry out the University and department mission.
  • Oversee the review, approval, and reporting of all expenditures and financial transactions.
  • Create and manage support systems for cost-effective supplies and management information.
  • Monitor contractual obligations and ensure consistency with departmental goals and initiatives.
  • Evaluate existing internal controls and approval processes, recommending improvements for fiscal integrity and operational efficiency.
  • Implement department human resources actions, including hiring and performance evaluations.
  • Foster a positive work environment through effective leadership and communication.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in health administration, business administration, or a health-related field, or six years of relevant experience required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to manage a budget and work within its constraints.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of others.
  • Proficiency in computer software, particularly Microsoft Office.
