About the position

The Director of Commercialization and New Ventures at the University of Oregon will lead the Translational Opportunity Program (TOP), which aims to demonstrate the technical and commercial feasibility of academic innovations. This role is pivotal in accelerating the process of attracting commercial partners through licensing or establishing startups. The Director will oversee product development and startup support efforts, ensuring effective communication and collaboration to maximize research impact and innovation success.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Translational Opportunity Program (TOP) to support academic innovations with commercial potential.
  • Drive optimization of outcomes for research impact through innovation development and startup success.
  • Accelerate the development of products and services that address market needs, facilitating their path to market through licensing or startup formation.
  • Ensure a continuum of startup support from early-stage interest to attracting funding and raising capital.
  • Expand the university's capacity to generate market-driven innovations and launch successful startups.
  • Elevate the University of Oregon as a premier source of investment opportunities for various funding sources.
  • Increase the quality and quantity of startups emerging from UO research.
  • Establish UO as a thought leader in research commercialization and impact.

Requirements

  • Seven years of relevant work experience in deep tech or social science/ed tech startups, or experience in professionally investing in such startups.
  • A master's degree in a research-driven field or an undergraduate degree with an MBA, or a total of fifteen years of experience in driving early-stage innovations to market.
  • Experience determining the most efficient path to market for innovations protected by patents, copyrights, and trademarks.
  • A track record of success in coaching startups or being part of startups that have successfully brought products to market.
