About the position

The Director of Communications and Marketing at the American Mathematical Society (AMS) is a senior leadership role responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive communication and marketing strategies that align with the organization's mission and goals. This position involves overseeing all marketing and communications efforts, including digital marketing, media relations, content creation, and event promotion, while leveraging data to inform decision-making and enhance the AMS's visibility and engagement with its diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy aligned with the organization's mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Collaborate with the senior leadership team to identify, define, and engage all audiences through effective communication strategies and tactics.
  • Lead the communications and marketing team, providing vision, direction, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all communications, reinforcing the organization's identity and mission.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of robust communication strategies to enhance the organization's public image and reputation.
  • Cultivate relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to enhance the organization's visibility.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization when necessary.
  • Collaborate with the membership team to develop and manage communication strategies for member engagement.
  • Develop promotional materials and campaigns for events, maximizing attendance and engagement.
  • Monitor and analyze marketing metrics to assess the effectiveness of campaigns and initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in marketing communications, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful marketing and communication strategies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in using data and metrics to drive decision-making.
  • Proficiency in content management systems, social media platforms, and digital marketing tools.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector and/or membership organizations is highly desirable.
