About the position

The Director of Communications and Marketing at the American Mathematical Society (AMS) is a senior leadership role responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategies to enhance the organization's communication, marketing, and branding efforts. This position aims to engage diverse audiences, promote the AMS's mission, and leverage data-driven insights to inform decision-making. The director will oversee all aspects of marketing and communications, including digital marketing, media relations, content creation, and event promotion, while leading a team to foster a collaborative and high-performance culture.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy aligned with the organization's mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Collaborate with the senior leadership team to identify, define, and engage all audiences through effective communication strategies and tactics.
  • Lead the communications and marketing team, providing vision, direction, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all communications, reinforcing the organization's identity and mission.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of robust communication strategies to enhance the organization's public image and reputation.
  • Cultivate relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers to enhance visibility and reputation.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization when necessary.
  • Develop and manage communication strategies to keep members informed and engaged.
  • Collaborate with the meetings and conferences team to develop promotional materials and campaigns for events.
  • Monitor and analyze marketing metrics to assess the effectiveness of campaigns and initiatives.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of compelling content for various platforms, including newsletters and social media.
  • Drive digital marketing efforts, including SEO, SEM, email marketing, and social media campaigns.
  • Develop and manage the communications and marketing budget, ensuring efficient use of resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in marketing communications, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Proven track record of developing and executing successful marketing and communication strategies.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in using data and metrics to drive decision-making.
  • Proficiency in content management systems, social media platforms, and digital marketing tools.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector and/or membership organizations is highly desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in developing and managing communication strategies for membership organizations.
  • Familiarity with marketing and membership management software and CRM systems.
