About the position

The Director of Communications & Public Policy at the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies that enhance the organization's visibility and reputation. This role involves overseeing all internal and external communications, leading a team of communication professionals, and collaborating with various departments to promote initiatives and achievements. Additionally, the Director will manage the Chamber's Government Affairs activities, focusing on mobilizing the business community around key issues affecting the New Haven Region.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Chamber's events and marketing staff.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive communication plans that support organizational objectives.
  • Manage the creation and dissemination of content across multiple platforms, including media alerts, newsletters, social media, and the company website.
  • Oversee media relations efforts to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and journalists.
  • Conduct research to assess communication effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Identify policy initiatives for the Chamber to support.
  • Draft the Chamber's annual legislative agenda and other policy positions.
  • Summarize current activities/actions at the State Capitol.
  • Liaison to the Chamber's Government Affairs Committee.
  • Support the Regional Leadership Council.
  • Monitor municipal governments in the New Haven region, including attendance at evening town/city meetings when required.
  • Establish positive working relationships with the region's 15 chief elected officials and regional state legislators.
  • Manage information campaigns around specific initiatives and policies using multiple media platforms.
  • Interact with the news media for all Chamber events and activities.
  • Manage the program for the Chamber's Legislative Forum and Public Policy Summit.
  • Meet with state legislators in their districts.
  • Assist with other Chamber activities as needed.

Requirements

  • Strong research skills with experience in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
  • Strong public speaking abilities.
  • Familiarity with Hubspot.
  • Expertise in using statistical software for analyzing communication impact metrics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments while leading a team effectively.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
