About the position

The Director of Communications at the University of Virginia will lead the development and execution of comprehensive communication strategies to effectively convey research initiatives to diverse audiences. This role requires exceptional leadership skills and a proven track record in strategic communications, with a focus on collaboration across teams to enhance the university's research reputation and visibility.

Responsibilities

  • Direct a range of communication initiatives, including press releases and executive communications for various audiences.
  • Develop and recommend data-driven process improvements and optimize communication channels, tools, and strategies.
  • Continuously monitor and analyze media coverage, public sentiment, and social media trends to refine communication strategies.
  • Oversee the editorial calendar and produce high-quality articles on key areas of UVA Research.
  • Handle all press relations and engage media to promote strategic UVA Research stories.
  • Analyze data and metrics to assess the effectiveness of communication initiatives.
  • Develop and manage OVPR internal and external events in partnership with the Director of Marketing.
  • Collaborate with University Communications to maximize the dissemination of press stories.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related fields.
  • At least seven years of experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related fields; or a master's degree with at least five years of experience.

  • Experience developing and implementing an effective communications strategy.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven track record creating and delivering effective internal communications programs.
  • Experience generating earned media.
  • Ability to meet competing deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and similar tools.
