About the position

The Director of Development for Operations and Stewardship provides visionary leadership, oversight, and direction to Direct Marketing, Direct Mail, Donor Services, Events, Prospect Management, Prospect Research, and Development Services for The Carter Center. This role is pivotal in shaping the future of the Center's fundraising efforts, which currently generate approximately $300 million annually through cash, in-kind donations, and pledges. The Director will be instrumental in developing new donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies aimed at sustaining and expanding the existing donor base. In addition to overseeing the operational aspects of fundraising, the Director will work to enhance the Center's outreach efforts, targeting new partnerships and attracting contributions from emerging generations of donors who resonate with the Center's mission and vision. This includes creating policies and implementing systems that streamline the Development infrastructure, ensuring seamless pathways for donor engagement and stewardship. The Director is also committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace environment, managing a team of over ten fundraising and administrative professionals. Collaboration is key in this role, as the Director will work closely with the Vice President for Development and other leaders within the Development team. Responsibilities include supervising various senior staff members, identifying staffing needs to support growth, and developing a strategic staffing plan to meet fundraising objectives. The position requires some travel, and candidates must complete Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) for certain travel locations. Overall, the Director of Development for Operations and Stewardship is a strategic leader who will drive innovation in fundraising operations and enhance the donor experience at The Carter Center.

Responsibilities

  • Provide visionary leadership and oversight to Direct Marketing, Direct Mail, Donor Services, Events, Prospect Management, Prospect Research, and Development Services.
  • Develop strategies to elevate the Center's annual donations of approximately $300 million.
  • Shape future direct marketing efforts and fundraising operations.
  • Foster new donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
  • Expand donor outreach to build new partnerships and attract new generations of donors.
  • Create policies and implement systems to streamline the Development infrastructure.
  • Manage a large team of fundraising and administrative professionals (10+).
  • Supervise senior staff responsible for various fundraising functions.
  • Identify areas for staff expansion to support growth plans and implement a staffing plan.
  • Collaborate closely with the Vice President for Development and other Development leaders.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and ten years of fundraising experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to organize, lead, and operationalize a collaborative and strategic unit to improve donor experience.
  • Record of working in large and complex environments while driving stewardship and operational innovation.
  • Proven track record in direct marketing and direct mail programs.
  • Experience managing teams of fundraising professionals with a donor-centric approach.
  • Significant experience with prospect management methods and software (Raiser's Edge NXT and DMI).
  • Experience with prospect research, moves management, and pipeline optimization.
  • Ability to develop and implement a long-term vision and support a strategic plan.
  • Experience in designing and executing high-profile fundraising events.
  • Ability to manage complex budgets and utilize financial management software.
  • Experience developing complex donor reports for analysis and presentations.
