About the position

The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at The United Nations International School (UNIS) is responsible for overseeing the execution of the school's diversity, equity, and inclusion plan. This role involves developing and implementing strategies that promote understanding and respect for diverse beliefs, cultures, and lifestyles within the school community. The Director will work closely with faculty, students, parents, and alumni to foster an inclusive environment that supports the academic and social needs of all students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide essential training in culturally-relevant equity pedagogy and the creation of democratic, culturally-responsive classrooms.
  • Manage the creation and facilitation of training and professional development covering educational equity, including disability, race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
  • Lead the creation of new initiatives that support UNIS's goals to become more inclusive, equitable, fair, and welcoming.
  • Oversee and set direction for committees and affinity groups responsible for UNIS's diversity, equity, and inclusion work.
  • Collaborate with teachers and support personnel to ensure all students are seen, known, and supported for their strengths and academic needs.
  • Mentor and advocate for faculty, staff, students, and parents on issues of social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
  • Help develop and shape programs and events that advance UNIS's strategic goals on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or higher credential preferred, preferably in education, educational administration, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience working directly to promote and support equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a leadership role in a school setting.
  • Experience as a teacher and teacher-leader with deep knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum, and child and adolescent development.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement short and long-term Diversity Strategic Goals with meaningful and measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience and success stewarding an inclusive, culturally-responsive school community.
  • Strong communicator and leader with interpersonal and collaborative skills, and outstanding speaking, writing, and organizational skills.
  • Proven management skills—the ability to manage up and down a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop community partnerships that offer opportunities for innovative and experiential collaboration.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a change agent within an academic environment.
  • Ability to inspire open, productive, and challenging conversations centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of current research, data acquisition and analysis, and successful implementation of strategies currently shaping Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work in schools.
  • Ability to seek consensus and design processes that are transparent, clear, and efficient.
  • Proven success in carrying out strategic goals and initiatives and in leading teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, adapt to changing priorities, and proactively manage multiple projects with concurrent deadlines.

Benefits

  • Annual salary range between $165,000 and $175,000, commensurate with experience.
