About the position

The Director of Finance and Accounting at Sterling Martin Associates is a part-time, remote role focused on managing the financial health of the firm. This position emphasizes metrics-driven performance measurement and strategic financial insights, requiring a seasoned financial professional with experience in professional services. The role involves routine in-person meetings in the DMV area, approximately 3-4 times per month with the CEO.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and ensure accuracy through bank reconciliations.
  • Develop, implement, and manage financial dashboards to monitor and report on organizational performance.
  • Prepare annual budgets and forecasts, monitor performance against these benchmarks, and report insights to leadership.
  • Oversee and project cash flow to ensure the firm meets its financial obligations and maintains appropriate reserves.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies; prepare necessary documents for regulatory, tax, and audit purposes.
  • Identify and assess financial risks, providing recommendations to mitigate potential issues.
  • Review and refine accounting processes (e.g., accounts payable/receivable, payroll) to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  • Provide project-based financial analysis to support data-driven decision-making for specific initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (preferred).
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation (preferred).
  • Proven experience in a professional services firm, such as recruiting, consulting or legal.
  • Strong proficiency in QuickBooks Online and financial dashboard management.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a metrics-driven approach to financial management.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and communicate financial insights effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with the CEO and team.
