About the position

The Director of Finance and Budget Analysis at the University of Chicago will play a pivotal role in managing the financial operations of the Library, which is recognized as a guardian of one of the largest academic library collections in North America. This position is responsible for leading and managing the operating budget, financial planning, and analysis, as well as procurement for the Library and its subunits. The Director will ensure that all financial activities align with the University’s operational budgets and strategies, acting as a liaison to University Finance, Research, and other organizational partners on fiscal matters related to the Library's financial operations. This role exemplifies the mission, vision, and values of the University of Chicago and the Library, adhering to organizational policies and procedures. In this capacity, the Director will manage various budgets, including operational, research, gifts, and endowment budgets, ensuring they align with the Library's budget strategy. The individual will be responsible for creating regular budget and expense projections for all operating units and will oversee revenue management and expense functions within the Library, maintaining fiduciary responsibilities that benefit the institution. The Director will also direct the analysis and reporting of the fiscal impact of services, research, and practice, proactively forecasting for long-term planning and providing financial information to senior Library leadership. Collaboration is key in this role, as the Director will work closely with Library management and supervisors to refine fiscal functions and present recommendations to the Associate Dean of Operations and Administration. This includes preparing and managing the Library's financial accounting, monitoring, and reporting systems for the operational budget. The Director will also stay informed about industry changes impacting Library finance, promoting best practices and advising on fiscal practices. Additionally, the role involves conducting regular education and training on financial metrics and operational concepts to the Library community, ensuring that all stakeholders are well-informed and equipped to manage their financial responsibilities effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Library operational, research, gifts, and endowment budgets for functional areas of responsibility and ensure alignment with Library budget strategy.
  • Create regular budget and expense projections for all operating units.
  • Oversee revenue management and expense functions within the Library, maintaining fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Direct the analysis and reporting of the fiscal impact of services, research, and practice, proactively forecasting for long-term planning.
  • Provide and interpret financial information for senior Library leadership and report regularly.
  • Collaborate with Library management to refine fiscal functions and present recommendations to the Associate Dean of Operations and Administration.
  • Prepare and manage the Library's financial accounting, monitoring, and reporting systems for the operational budget.
  • Develop, revise, and implement policies and procedures for finance areas, including revenue/expense management and grants/contracts.
  • Stay abreast of industry changes impacting Library finance and promote best practices.
  • Direct financial communications to internal stakeholders.
  • Conduct regular education and training on financial metrics and operational concepts to the Library community.
  • Analyze and prepare budgets, create accounts, and work with the financial accounting system to control expenses.
  • Prepare monthly reports and correct errors in accounts, advising on the financial impact of decisions.

Requirements

  • Minimum college or university degree in a related field.
  • 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
