About the position

The Director of Finance & Operations at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) plays a pivotal role in leading the finance, grants, and operations functions for the Airbel Impact Lab. This position is crucial for ensuring effective financial oversight, grants management, and operational support across a diverse portfolio of innovative projects aimed at addressing humanitarian crises. Reporting directly to the Chief Research & Innovation Officer, the Director will be a key member of the Airbel Senior Leadership Team, responsible for driving financial health and stability while fostering collaborative relationships across various departments within the IRC. In this role, the Director will oversee daily and long-term financial operations, ensuring exceptional management and compliance across multiple donor and funding types. This includes conducting multi-year financial analysis and planning, providing comprehensive reporting on financial outlooks, disbursements, fund balances, and potential risks. The Director will also be responsible for tracking and managing financial and operational risks associated with grants and contracts, offering strategic insights and recommendations to mitigate these risks. Leadership is a significant aspect of this role, as the Director will lead a team of Finance, Grants & Operations professionals, ensuring high-quality support and compliance in grants management. The Director will also streamline operations and business development processes between Airbel and IRC departments, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness. Additionally, the role involves planning and refining workforce strategies, providing expert guidance on donor relationships, and ensuring exceptional reporting and stewardship for all public and private donors. The Director is expected to inspire and mentor staff, fostering a high-performance team culture and promoting healthy collaborative relationships both within and outside the department. This position is not only about managing finances but also about making a lasting impact on the lives of millions affected by conflict and disaster through innovative solutions and effective operational support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the daily and long-term financial operations and planning of the department and delivery of a portfolio of innovative projects.
  • Ensure exceptional financial management, planning, and compliance across multiple donor and funding types.
  • Drive multi-year analysis and planning to ensure the financial health and stability of Airbel.
  • Provide reporting on R&I's financial outlook, disbursements, fund balances, and risks to R&I leadership.
  • Own financial and operational risk tracking and management for grants, contracts, and the department.
  • Provide CRIO with regular reporting and strategic analysis of the portfolio, including identification of potential risks and recommendations for mitigation strategies.
  • Lead a team of Finance, Grants & Operations professionals, ensuring outstanding grants management and compliance.
  • Align and streamline operations and business development processes between Airbel and IRC departments for improved efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Lead Airbel's operations and support functions, including consultant contracting, procurement, and payments.
  • Plan and lead the continued development and refinement of department workforce planning, including resource forecasting, project funding efficacy, and balanced employee workloads.
  • Provide expert guidance and support for donor relationships, contracting, subawards, and compliance issues.
  • Partner with IRC's External Relations and Awards Management units to support consistent and effective fundraising across the Airbel portfolio.
  • Ensure all Airbel public and private donors receive exceptional reporting, stewardship, and financial management.
  • Ensure a consistently high level of team performance, leading, mentoring, and empowering staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in International Affairs, Public Administration, Business or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 10 years of progressive work experience, including significant management experience.
  • Excellent financial leadership skills, including risk identification and mitigation, financial planning and analysis, business modeling, and executive reporting and presentation.
  • Strong track record of designing and implementing management systems and processes.
  • Exceptional leadership and management capabilities, with demonstrated success in building and growing successful teams.
  • Understanding of core accounting and reporting processes, preferably for International Non-Government Organizations.
  • Deep familiarity with key donor compliance requirements and challenges for both private and public donors.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: able to successfully and effectively partner with a variety of people in a multi-cultural environment and work on a virtual team.
  • Flexible work attitude, proactive and demonstrated creativity: the ability to work productively in a team environment and solve problems creatively with minimal guidance.
  • Proficiency in English, both verbal and written is required.
