About the position

The Director of Finance and HR at Riverside Church is a pivotal leadership role that encompasses the oversight and management of the church's financial operations, human resources, facilities, and various special projects. This position is designed for a candidate who is not only adept in financial management but also possesses a strong understanding of human resources and operational support. The Director will serve as the financial champion for Riverside Church, ensuring that all financial activities are conducted with integrity, transparency, and stewardship. This role is essential in helping the church achieve its mission and vision through effective operational support and strategic financial planning. In the finance domain, the Director will be responsible for developing and managing the church's annual budget, monitoring financial performance, and preparing regular financial reports for church leadership and the congregation. This includes overseeing accounts payable and receivable, coordinating annual audits, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. The Director will also engage in long-term financial planning and advise church leadership on financial strategies that promote growth and sustainability. A key aspect of this role is to foster stewardship strategies that encourage financial giving within the congregation, responding to donor inquiries and supporting donor relations. The human resources responsibilities include overseeing the onboarding process for new staff, managing the employee review process, and developing HR policies that comply with employment laws. The Director will also oversee employee benefits programs, ensuring that staff are well-informed about their options and that the benefits are effectively administered. In terms of facilities management, the Director will ensure the maintenance and upkeep of church facilities, manage vendor relationships, and coordinate capital projects. This role also involves leading special initiatives as assigned by the Executive Pastor, which may include technology upgrades and event coordination. The ideal candidate will be a tactical leader who can implement strategic plans effectively, ensuring that all operational aspects of the church run smoothly and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage the church's annual budget.
  • Monitor and report on financial performance against budget, and recommend adjustments as needed.
  • Prepare and present regular financial reports to church leadership and congregation.
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable, including timely processing of invoices, donations, and other financial transactions.
  • Coordinate annual audits and ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard the church's financial assets.
  • Provide long-term financial planning and forecasting.
  • Advise church leadership on financial strategies and opportunities for growth.
  • Identify areas of growth in financial giving and present these in lead team meetings for discussion and strategic response.
  • Respond to donor inquiries and communications promptly and courteously.
  • Oversee the onboarding process for all new staff positions.
  • Ensure timely completion of performance evaluations and adherence to HR policies.
  • Develop and maintain HR policies and procedures.
  • Oversee employee benefits programs, including health insurance and retirement plans.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and contractors for facility-related services.
  • Coordinate and manage capital projects, including renovations and new construction.
  • Lead and support special initiatives and projects as assigned by the Executive Pastor.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of major church events.
  • Maintain and update the church's member database, ensuring accurate and current information.
  • Oversee property and liability insurance programs and manage building safety and security measures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in financial management, HR, and operations, preferably in a church or non-profit setting.
  • Strong understanding of financial principles, budgeting, and accounting practices.
  • Experience with financial software and systems.
  • Knowledge of human resources best practices, including recruitment, employee relations, and benefits administration.
  • Proven problem solver with a pragmatic approach to issues.
  • Experience managing facilities and coordinating maintenance and capital projects.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and church leadership.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and values of Riverside Church.
