About the position

The Director of Finance at Visit Spokane plays a crucial role in overseeing the financial operations of the organization. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, this position is responsible for maintaining executive oversight of various financial aspects including working capital, expenditures, revenue justification, debt levels, taxes, and strategic budget development and execution. The Director will assist the CEO in formulating an annual financial strategy and plans, ensuring that the organization’s financial health is robust and sustainable. In this role, the Director of Finance will analyze financial data and create models that inform decision-making. Key areas of focus will include financial statements, budget variances, revenue and expense trends, financial forecasting, return on investment (ROI), cash flow management, risk assessment, and benchmarking against industry standards. The models created will be instrumental in guiding future investment decisions and enhancing the overall efficiency of the organization. The Director will also be responsible for maintaining the Accounting & Financial Reporting System in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and conventional non-profit accounting practices. This includes executing general ledger functions, managing accounts payable and receivable, calculating incentives and commissions, and overseeing payroll processes. Additionally, the Director will prepare claims for funds from city and county financial sources, ensuring compliance with all contractual requirements. As the administrator for the Tourism Promotion Area revenue source with Spokane County, the Director will ensure the protection of assets through internal audits and adequate insurance coverage. The role also involves managing the annual audit and preparation of IRS Form 990, as well as maintaining and implementing financial policies and guidelines. Collaboration with the HR department for benefits procurement and management is also a key responsibility, along with managing payroll taxes and related reports. The position requires a strong understanding of financial principles, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently while demonstrating sound judgment. The Director of Finance will also need to be adaptable, as other duties and responsibilities may change or be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the CEO in the development of an annual financial strategy and plans.
  • Analyze data and create models based on the analysis, focusing on financial statements, budget variances, revenue and expense trends, financial forecasting, ROI, cash flow management, risk assessment, and benchmarking against industry standards.
  • Maintain Accounting & Financial Reporting System in accordance with GAAP and conventional non-profit accounting practices.
  • Execute general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, incentive and commission calculation, and payroll processes.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual claims for funds from city/county financial sources and ensure all contractual requirements are met.
  • Serve as administrator for the Tourism Promotion Area revenue source with Spokane County.
  • Assure protection of assets through internal audits, adequate insurance coverage, and management of ERISA bond.
  • Manage annual audit and 990 preparations.
  • Maintain and implement Financial Policies and Guidelines documentation, ensuring policies and guidelines are followed.
  • Assist HR with benefits procurement and management, including benefits census reporting and management.
  • Manage payroll taxes, including monthly, quarterly, and annual Federal and State payroll tax reports and payments.

Requirements

  • Finance Degree required; MBA preferred.
  • Working knowledge of QuickBooks Online and proficiency with Office 365.
  • General knowledge of payroll, payroll taxes, federal and state tax law.
  • General knowledge of GAAP.
  • Non-profit accounting and/or DMO industry experience preferred.
  • Excellent communication and public presentation skills.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated independent work habits and sound judgement.
