About the position

The position is responsible for the overall management and strategic leadership of the Forestry Department within the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB). This role involves effective planning, administrative work, and ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies while supporting the mission of the MPRB. The individual will develop departmental procedures, manage budgets, foster community relationships, and address labor relations issues, all while enhancing services for underserved communities.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and provide strategic leadership for the Forestry Department.
  • Develop short- and long-term department procedures, work rules, objectives, and goals.
  • Evaluate programs and services to ensure they meet planned objectives.
  • Maintain effective communication with Park Board staff, public agencies, and the general public.
  • Prepare and administer the Forestry Department's annual budget.
  • Build a collaborative work environment to enhance community services.
  • Manage labor relations issues, including grievances and disciplinary actions.
  • Assist in identifying and addressing park and recreation needs of underserved communities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban and Community Forestry, Forestry, Natural Resources, Arboriculture, or a closely related field (Master's preferred).
  • At least six years of increasingly responsible experience in municipal or urban forestry.
  • At least six years of experience in leadership, management, and administration.
  • At least six years of experience supervising others.
  • Minimum of three years supervising unionized employees; six or more years preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License and safe driving record.
  • ISA Certified Arborist with Municipal Specialist endorsement within one year of hire.
  • Tree Inspector's License from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources within one year of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience with community outreach and engagement.
  • Knowledge of local environmental policies and regulations.
