About the position

The Director of Health Equity serves as the Chief Health Equity Officer for the San Francisco Department of Public Health, providing visionary leadership and strategic direction to advance health equity initiatives. This role focuses on overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of health equity programs and policies, ensuring alignment with the department's mission to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes for underserved populations. The position requires balancing community needs with government system changes and involves significant community engagement and cross-departmental coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and vision for health equity initiatives.
  • Identify health disparities and their root causes.
  • Conduct data analysis and develop metrics to measure health equity progress.
  • Coordinate and integrate health disparity work across departments.
  • Ensure clear communication and transparency in health equity efforts.
  • Evaluate and hold accountable health equity programs and policies.
  • Engage with the community to promote health equity and inclusion.
  • Consult on equity policies and represent the Department in equity work.
  • Drive cultural and organizational change management related to health equity.
  • Investigate the role of structural and institutional inequities in health outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of experience managing multiple department-level divisions in healthcare or social services, including supervising professionals.
  • Deep expertise in delivering healthcare and public health services to vulnerable populations.
  • Comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and local regulations governing healthcare and public health activities.
  • Exceptional sensitivity and judgment in handling complex proposals and decisions.
  • Proficient in the GARE model for racial equity and LEAN tools for planning and communication.
  • Skilled in analyzing policies through an equity lens and facilitating collaboration among diverse staff.
  • Experience in measuring health disparities and implementing interventions to reduce them.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to develop leadership in staff.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or public health administration.
  • Clinical discipline degree (MD or RN preferred).
  • Experience in value-based care and quality improvement programs.
  • Knowledge of social determinants of health and health equity.
