About the position

The Director of Human Resources and Staff Development will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resources department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the organization's mission and talent strategy. The Director will be an active participant in the Executive Leadership team, contributing to the organization's strategic goal-setting process and will lead the organization's staff training and development efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain working knowledge of federal and state employment laws, wage and hour laws, as well as current human resources practices and ensures that policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance.
  • Recruitment and on-boarding functions including: crafting job descriptions and developing recruitment strategy, posting job announcements/advertisements, interviewing, selection, and new employee orientation.
  • Supervise Human Resource department staff.
  • Coordinate terminations and facilitates exit interview process.
  • Manage the ADP payroll and database account and maintain data and documents for all human resources related activities and reports such as hires, promotions, transfers, performance reviews, and terminations.
  • Coach managers on performance management principles and practices (interviewing, hiring, terminations, promotions, performance review, safety, and sexual harassment) to enable continuous development.
  • Handle employee relations issues and concerns, including discipline and complaint procedures.
  • Communicate and facilitate understanding of employment policies through handbooks, meetings, email messages, and other forms of communication.
  • Administer performance review program to ensure effectiveness, compliance, and equity within organization.
  • Administer compensation program to ensure compliance and equity within organization, including benchmarking and participating in compensation and benefit surveys, as applicable.
  • Coordinate leave of absences. Counsel employees about state and federal leave rights.
  • Administer worker' compensation program - reporting and record keeping, etc.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Travel to all Roots' sites on a rotating basis to ensure staff needs are met.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or minimum of five years related experience and/or training; PHR/SPHR certificate; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Work experience with a non-profit, preferably in the social services field or at a community health clinic.
  • Ability to write policies, reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before Roots' employees and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, as well as knowledge of database functionality.
  • Proficiency with ADP TotalSource, preferred.
  • Valid California Driver's license and insurance and ability to be insured under Roots' auto insurance.
  • PHR/SPHR Certification, preferred.
  • Ability to travel around the Bay Area to multiple Roots sites.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to work consultatively with all levels of leadership.
  • Ability to safeguard confidentiality by exercising discretion in communicating information, handling records, files and all confidential materials.
