About the position

The Director of Information Security at Hofstra University is a senior leadership role responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive information security strategy. This position advocates for the university's information security needs, collaborates with various departments, and leads the information security program to optimize the institution's security posture. The Director will manage governance processes, establish security goals, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations while fostering a culture of security awareness across the campus community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for the University's information security program.
  • Advise the CIO and senior leadership on information security objectives and governance processes.
  • Establish annual and long-range security and compliance goals, metrics, and reporting mechanisms.
  • Stay current with information security issues and regulatory changes affecting higher education.
  • Mentor Information Security team members and implement professional development plans.
  • Develop and implement policies to secure protected and sensitive data.
  • Coordinate and track information technology and security-related audits.
  • Create education and awareness programs on security issues and best practices.
  • Act as the primary control point during significant information security incidents.
  • Establish processes to review new technologies for security compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in information technology with a focus on information security.
  • Demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English for effective communication with technical and non-technical individuals.
  • Understanding and respect for the academic, cultural, and social diversity in the Hofstra University community.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering, information security, or related field.
  • One or more relevant professional certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM/A).
  • Experience with state and federal information security regulatory requirements (GLBA, FERPA, HIPAA).
  • Knowledge of industry-standard IT security frameworks (NIST, IHECF).
  • Significant experience in a higher education environment regarding cybersecurity awareness.
